Biology 101 Lecture Policy

Grades: Your final grade will be determined through three scores. These three scores are (1) The average of unit tests (counts as 50% of final grade), (2) the final exam score (counts as 25% of final grade), and (3) the lab grade (counts as 25% of final grade). Failure to participate in a any test will result in a score of "0" being assigned for that test.

Absences: Students are allowed to miss 20% of the total contact hours for a course before being withdrawn from the roll. The sum of contact hours for these biology classes is 96. Biology students are therefore allowed to miss 19 hours total in lecture and lab. Each lecture counts as one hour. Each lab counts as three hours. Excuses for absences are not ordinarily required. In special cases, if a student misses more than the allowed number of hours and is dropped from the roll, he or she may apply for readmission by providing documentation on a significant number of the absences. If the documentation is satisfactory and there is reasonable expectation that the student can complete the course successfully, he or she may be reinstated. Students who are dropped from the roll for absences and who's last day of attendence is after midterm will receive a grade of "WF" (withdrawn failing) unless there are special circumstances.

Tardiness: It can be reasonably expected that every student will on some occasion have circumstances that result in late arrival to class. Habitual tardiness will not be allowed. Every three tardies will count as one absence.

Absence on exam days: Students are strongly urged not to be absent on exam days. An exam can be made up only if the student can furnish documentation that the absence was due to their own sickness or injury, a death in the immediate family, or a circumstance beyond their control ( ex: flood, earthquake, nuclear war). Students who have missed an exam are responsible for furnishing the documentation and scheduling the make-up within three school days of their return to class. Students will be allowed to make up only one exam per semester..

Classroom etiquette and discipline: Students in classes at York Tech are considered adults and are expected to conduct themselves with maturity and consideration for others. Disruptive or inconsiderate behavior will not be allowed.

Disabilities Statement:  Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the Special Resources Offices (SR) at 803-327-8007 in the 300 area of Student Services. The SRO coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities.
